Jesus, You teach me and help me to dance with You! Thank You!
By dancing with You, even standing on your feet as You dance the steps, I absorb the life-giving rhythm of heaven’s music. It is becoming ever more impressed into the very fabric of my being.
Have Your way in me, beloved Spirit of Jesus, for I surrender to You. It is my heart’s desire to please and enjoy You.
Let it be so, Lord! — From my journal, 4 October, 2026.
Reflecting on my journal entry and its metaphorical picture of my deeply meaningful spiritual encounter with my beloved Lord, I felt its echo take me back to a life-giving experiential encounter with Jesus so long ago.
It was late 2002 and I was enjoying a quiet, relaxing, morning time with a stream of warm water cascading over me. Quite unexpectedly, I found myself in a vision experience; not only did I see the mental image, I was also in it. Jesus was standing in front of me, His hand extended toward me in an invitation.
Dance with me!
Unbidden sobs erupted from deep within as Jesus’ words spoke into a space in my heart wounded so long ago by my father’s thoughtless and insensitive words to me. A young teen at the time, I’d gone with dad to his school’s social evening. He was the Principal of a primary (grade) school with a small, but vibrant ethnic community which had organised this celebration of its warm, hospitable culture!
Immersed in the joy and delight of learning the dances, I didn’t see it coming… For a few wonderfully precious moments I let my ever-watchful guard down to have fun, but now the words shot like arrows into my highly sensitive and wounded heart.
“Heather, you have no sense of rhythm!”
Feeling utterly crushed and ashamed, I fled back into the familiar—my internal hiding place.
Fast forward decades later to the redemptive experience into which the gentle, honouring, caring, kind, beloved Spirit of God invited me.
Through my sobs I told Jesus, “But I can’t dance! I’ll tread on Your toes and hurt You.” The anxiety, fear and shame had become entrenched through the long years of rehearsing the judgement, I have no sense of rhythm.
But oh!—the transformative, eternally redemptive, merciful, gracious and love of our beloved Father God! With amazing tenderness, Jesus, the Word, spoke healing freedom into my soul.
Beloved, stand on My feet and I’ll teach you each step of the dance!
“… young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” (Jeremiah 31:13 NIV)
In Christ, through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in my soul, I continue to learn and absorb the beautiful, healing rhythm of the music of the Kingdom of Heaven!
Perhaps reflecting on a few of the steps (in no particular order) into which the Lord of the dance has led me over many years might be helpful for you?
- It is safe and right to open up to Holy Spirit’s gentle, powerful, transformative work of inner healing.
- Praying—conversation with Jesus. Be sure to listen and not do all the talking!
- Reading the Bible—because I want to—not because it’s a task on a to-do list to tick off!
- Saying “Yes!” over and over again to Jesus. His will, not mine, is a choice.
- Journalling is such a help. You might also find art is how you express the inner conversations, both with God and yourself.
- Being part of a local church community where you hear and encounter Jesus.
- Asking for prayer and counsel from trusted friends, family, Church Pastors and mentors.
- Admitting I needed help; this took many years but I became desperate. This dance step led me to work with a Christian Counsellor (Therapist) who also used prayer ministry. Though it was hard work the Lord was with us. It was a safe place for me to face each issue and learn to truly and freely forgive.
- Books. A question I regularly ask before reading something is, “Holy Spirit, what do You want me to receive?”
- Surrender opportunities such as seminars and courses to Holy Spirit for His opinion rather than signing up for it all!
- “God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” (See 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NLT — emphasis mine.)
- A recent step for me has been to accept God’s invitation to be mentored by Beth Kennedy in the prophetic and Kingdom of God living. By the way, you may go to Verve Ministries1 to purchase Beth’s first book, I Am God’s Happy Place, a compelling and inspiring read. You can also sign up to get her latest “God is Good” stories, or enrol in the Prophetic Mastery Mentorship. (The latter only opens its doors at select times.)
I have learned not to rush the dance steps of God’s redemptive healing. It must be a one-step-at-a-time process, and it’s okay (and good) to return to any step whenever needed.
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven … A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4 NLT)
Reflecting on your own life, how has the Spirit of Jesus, the Lord of the dance, met you in your own brokenness and redeemed you with the Father’s gifts of healing and restoration?
Is it time? Turn to Jesus and He will turn to you. Let Him lead you into your next right step. My own story informs me that the Spirit of Jesus will be with you through it all, one step at a time.
In the featured photo of this post, my beloved husband, Ross, is dancing with our precious daughter Jessica, Andrew’s beautiful bride (in 2012)!

Another book I recommend is 21 Gifts: A Sacred Dance Through Grief and Healing. I met Australian author, chaplain and speaker, Raewyn Elsegood2, at this month’s Omega Writers’ Conference in Adelaide. Raewyn shared a very moving and inspiring message with us in our Sunday morning worship space. On her website she writes, “As a chaplain for the past 10 years, I’ve merged my twin passions of writing and caring for people after my own grief journey opened my eyes to an essential truth: joy can coexist with sorrow.”
